About the video tutorial “Fashion & Glamour Lighting Techniques Revisited”

Duration is 90 minutes
Download version is only $90.00 US

760 MB Download for video and printable lighting diagrams.

Broadband Internet connection is required for download.

The video will play the best on your computer with VLC Media Player or Divx Player. I suggest the free VLC Media Player from http://www.videolan.org/vlc/as it works great on any operating system platform. Divx Player is also free at http://www.divx.com/divx/

We are not offering a DVD version at this time. In the event that you have a download issue, please contact us and we can make other arrangements for video delivery.

This first video examines fashion and glamour lighting using just 1 or 2 light sources. We will examine each of the 12 lighting modifiers and how or when we might use them. We will discuss the 18 lighting diagrams and the 19 images created. Follow me as I comment on the lighting diagrams and watch a behind-the-scenes video of the 4 models photographed. This video spans what I have learned over the last 20 years of shooting and modifying the light quality of my studio flash units to a give a 3-dimensional and cinematic light quality.

I use both traditional light modifiers and also several custom built modifiers. It is important to understand that lighting modifiers do not necessarily have to be expensive, they just have to work consistently under varying environments. I do not push brand names or endorse any specific company. In fact, I use a very inexpensive brand of mono-head flash units to create the images both in the video and for my commercial portfolio.

The specific light modifiers discussed include the 22″ Beauty Dish w/Grid, Modified 48″ Octabox w/Grid, Strobe Head w/7″ Grid, Strobe Head Bare-bulb, Strobe Head w/Reflector, 4 different versions of the V-Bank, and several flat panel variants. Each image in the video uses a different combination of the modifiers to demonstrate the degree of flexibility they can offer the photographer.

As a commercial photographer, I prefer to have visual explanations, and that is the format for all the tutorials. Rather than focusing on technical aspects related to digital photography, this video is about LIGHTING. The inspiration for this video was to teach LIGHTING, not Photoshop or how to fix it later. Show me the lights, the modifiers, and toss in a few tips on when to use these lights. The images in the video are not retouched for lighting, just RAW conversions and the basic 30-second levels adjustments and simple skin cleaning.

I felt it was necessary to touch on a few digital tech details, we all come from different skill levels. Monitor Calibration, White Balance, Color Spaces, and Light Meters may be new areas for some of us. This chapter is more about bringing us up to speed than a in depth discussion. Never the less, this a very important yet frequently over looked area.

Topics include:
1) The Lighting Modifiers used and how to build your own inexpensively
2) White Balance - Using a gray card
3) Color Spaces - sRGB vs. Prophoto and 16 Bit
4) Monitor Calibration
5) What is a good exposure
6) How to use a light meter
7) My lens suggestions Alien Skin Filters and Plugins used for the images

Production Planning
1) Planning the Day for Success - your crew and team
2) Utilizing Assistants
3) Directing Models

Aolani

ABSTRACT

Big animals - if we learn to love them and understand their survival - we will do everything to protect them.

Professional marine and wildlife photographer Amos Nachoum will show his photos of large animals from around the world, talk about the process of taking these photos, show the equipment he uses, and describe why we should care about and protect these animals.

Check out a preview of some of his stunning wildlife photos: http://www.corp.google.com/~sethml/amos.nachoum/index.html

This talk will be taped.

Speaker: Amos Nachoum
Professional Marine and Wildlife Photographer Amos Nachoum has led National Geographic expedition teams with Dr. Eugenie Clark, Dr. Sylvia Earle, astronaut Buzz Aldrin, and has co-produced documentaries with Stan Waterman. He was the team leader for National Geographic’s Red Sea, Great White Shark, and November ‘96 Killer Whale photo expeditions. Mr. Nachoum’s photos and essays have appeared in more than 500 publications in North America, Europe, and Japan, including National Geographic magazine, Ocean Realm, Island, Outside, Rodale’s Scuba Diving, Time, Life, The New York Times, Condé Nast Traveler, Le Figaro, Terra Sauvage, Airone, and Mondo Somerso.

Amos Nachoum - photographerIn addition, his work has been included in the books The Living Ocean, Oceans, and The World of Nature. He has been profiled in television appearances on National Geographic Explorer (Sept. ‘97), the Today Show, and Good Morning America, as well as in People, Esquire, and Money magazines.

In 1988 he won Nikon’s underwater photography contest and in 1993, the Communication Arts Award. He is currently an instructor on the Nikonos team of professional photographers and also conducts his own SLR and advanced u/w photo seminars.

After spending three years circumnavigating the globe, Amos co-founded Israel’s Marine National Park on the Red Sea. In 1978 he established La Mer Diving Seafari Inc, a New York-based adventure-travel company that brought North American divers to some of the most pristine and exotic underwater locations on the planet, from the Galapagos Islands to the Maldives, from Papua New Guinea to Madagascar and the Red Sea. In the course of directing these operations he has become an expert at working in partnership with foreign governments and companies to bring divers to some of the most beautiful and little-visited parts of the underwater realm, with preservation of the environment’s integrity foremost in every encounter.

Amos Nachoum - photographerSince 1992, Amos’s efforts have been focused on professional commercial and editorial photography for such clients as the Israeli office of tourism, Saba Island, the governments of Australia, New Zealand, and Brazil, and large private clients ranging from Apple, IBM, and Microsoft to The Discovery Channel, Armani, the Walt Disney corporation, and Colombia Pictures.

Arising from the belief that private individuals should have access to the same sights as governments and large corporations, Amos has developed the cutting-edge adventure-travel program Big Animals Photography Expeditions specifically to provide opportunities to observe, photograph, and interact with the most imposing inhabitants of the sea, such as great white sharks, killer whales, sperm and humpback whales, dolphins, and more. Only through such observation and interaction, Amos Nachoum believes, can people learn to truly understand and respect some of the most impressive citizens of our water planet.

Szemere

Photography © The Estate of Henri Cartier-Bresson
http://www.henricartierbresson.org/
Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908-2004) was a French photographer considered to be the father of modern photojournalism, an early adopter of 35 mm format, and the master of candid photography. He helped develop the “street photography” style that has influenced generations of photographers that followed.

Trained as a painter, he began his career in photography in 1931 on a trip to the Ivory Coast. He was one of the first photographers to shoot in the 35mm format with a Leica camera, and helped to develop the photojournalistic “street photography” style that influenced generations of photographers to come.

It was there on the Côte d’Ivoire that he contracted blackwater fever, which nearly killed him. Returning to France, Cartier-Bresson recuperated in Marseille in 1931 and deepened his relationship with the Surrealists. He became inspired by a photograph by Hungarian photojournalist Martin Munkacsi
http://artneutre.bitacoras.com/imatges/munkacsi.jpg

Cartier-Bresson said: “The only thing which completely was an amazement to me and brought me to photography was the work of Munkacsi. When I saw the photograph of Munkacsi of the black kids running in a wave I couldn’t believe such a thing could be caught with the camera. I said damn it, I took my camera and went out into the street.”

The photograph inspired him to stop painting and to take up photography seriously. He explained, “I suddenly understood that a photograph could fix eternity in an instant.”. He acquired the Leica camera with 50 mm lens in Marseilles that would accompany him for many years. He described the Leica as an extension of his eye.

Cartier-Bresson is well known for his concept of the “decisive moment” in photography. He defined this moment as “the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event as well as of a precise organization of forms which gave that event its proper expression
During his photographic career Cartier-Bresson photographed all over the world - Mexico, Canada, USA, Europe, India, Burma, Pakistan, Indonesia, Africa, Burma, China, Japan, Cuba, and the USSR, among other places. He also photographed many famous personalities and artists of the 20th century, including Matisse, Picasso, Coco Chanel, Truman Capote, and Gandhi. His interest in the visual arts also extended to film - he made films with Jean Renoir, Jacques Becker and André Zvoboda and a documentary on Republican Spain (1937).

During the Second World War Cartier-Bresson was taken prisoner by the Germans and escaped, then photographed the occupation and liberation of France. During this time rumors reached the USA that he had been killed, and the Museum of Modern Art began to prepare a “posthumous” show. Cartier-Bresson later spent a year in the US helping to prepare this show.
In 1947 Cartier-Bresson co-founded the photographic cooperative Magnum along with fellow photographers Robert Capa, George Rodger, David Seymour, Bill Vandivert and others.

Valuing his anonymity as a tool for capturing decisive moments with his camera, Cartier-Bresson did not like to be photographed, and shot with a Leica camera which was smaller, quieter and less intrusive than other cameras.
Cartier-Bresson retired from photography in the early 1970s and by 1975 no longer took pictures other than an occasional private portrait; he said he kept his camera in a safe at his house and rarely took it out. He returned to drawing and painting. After a lifetime of developing his artistic vision through photography, he said, “All I care about these days is painting — photography has never been more than a way into painting, a sort of instant drawing.”

Cartier-Bresson is regarded as one of the art world’s most unassuming personalities. He disliked publicity and exhibited a ferocious shyness since his days in hiding from the Nazis during World War II. He hated to be photographed and treasured his privacy above all. Photographs of Cartier-Bresson do exist, but they are scant. When he accepted an honorary degree from Oxford University in 1975, he held a paper in front of his face to avoid being photographed. He did recall that he once confided his innermost secrets to a Paris taxi driver, certain that he would never meet the man again.
The Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation was created by Cartier-Bresson and his wife and daughter in 2002 to preserve and share his legacy.
